Reefer Madness
Originally released in 1936, Reefer Madness is an exploitation film designed to warn parents about the dangers of cannabis. The melodramatic plot follows high school students whose lives spiral into addiction, madness, and violent crime after smoking marijuana. It has since become celebrated as an unintentionally hilarious cult classic.
She Shoulda Said No
Released in 1949, She Shoulda Said No! is an exploitation drama loosely based on the real-life marijuana arrest of its star, Lila Leeds. The story follows a young dancer whose life and career spiral into ruin after she is introduced to smoking marijuana. Driven by melodramatic tragedy, the plot culminates in her brother's suicide and her own involvement in the criminal underworld before she helps police crack down on the drug trade.
Maniac
Released in 1934, Maniac is a bizarre pre-Code exploitation horror film about a former vaudeville actor who murders his employer and assumes his identity. Framed as a pseudo-scientific study on mental illness, the chaotic plot spirals into violent madness and murder. It has since become infamous as an incoherent and campy cult classic.
